Johnny Somrak was pretty influential. He was an old man when I met him as a maintenance worker in the Gunnison National forest, 1978. He had worked in mines of the region all his life and carried the tough, take no sh*#, attitude of a generation of laborers who had fought for mine safety reform. He immigrated with his family of Slavanic mountain people and apparently there were little or no safety laws in his early days. After a brief mention of some tragic work related accidents and in between spits from his chew, he said his father had given him three rules to live by that he was going to pass on to me: 1) Give an honest days work for whatever the wages are you've agreed to take, 2) Keep your damn hands off of other people's stuff, and 3) Protect what is yours with your life if need be.

I'm not sure how many people he passed that advice along to, but it's basic enough to have a powerful effect if enough people took it to heart.
