I think that when you factor in the competition from products like the Cassiopera and others, as well as the move towards fully functioning wearable PC's (see MIT's matchbox PC matchbox.stanford.edu ) over the next 2-3 years, the value of Palmpilots low footprint OS will diminish.

I expect everyone to be walking around with sub-$500 pocket PCs with 300MHz+, WIN-2002 and 2-5 Gig HD by 2003.

These products will come from Swatch, Casio, Seiko, Nokia, HP and 3COM if they ever get their act together.

They will be connected to nexgen wireless networks like the upcomming dirtside LMDS networks, the smarter units will have dual terrestrial and global satellite (S2COM; s2com.net ) connectivity.

Its going to be a fun world and 3Com could play there.

By the way, in Tokyo today one can buy a pocket phone-internet device (e.g., J-phone) which surfs the web, sends and receives faxes and emails and is your cellphone, all for $120! and the battery lasts for a week! If the Japanese ever woke up to the global potential for these things they could swamp everyone. We see the nexgen versions of these things going satellite and global in 2002-3.

Enjoy
