Didn't Herschenson almost beat Boxer in their race? If I recall correctly, he was leading by a couple of points with a week to go. Then Boxer's people pulled a dirty trick and the polls went south on Herschenson. They claimed he was sneaking around girlie bars in his spare time, when all that happened was he had gone to one as a campaign gimmick. He was shaking hands and yukkin it up with everybody, hardly "sneaking around" as Boxer's people said. He was smeared, but he was also pretty stupid. Almost half the voters voted for him, though. And he was very conservative.
