Duke, I disagree with both you and Sarkie. From my years of watching B-movies on TV, it's been my observation that the #1 motivation for murder among thieves is paranoia. How many times have we seen an entire movie based around the bad guys tracking down the person(s) who they think can do them in? In fact, it's almost a clich‚ storyline where the good guy tries to trick the bad guy into thinking someone has the goods on them in order to lure them out of hiding to a particular location.

Therefore, the first thing I'd do if I were the FBI is amass a list of everyone connected to every major business deal the murdered men have done for the past few years. Then I'd check with the SEC to see which deals they not only had flagged for investigation, but were spending a great deal of time on. My thinking is that someone got nervous that their name was about to come up and wanted to prevent it. Considering Lehmann apparently had a reputation for working with authorities, I'm guessing the deal was quite recent and the killers didn't want to take any chances.
