Fortune magazine picked their businesspeople of the century. They picked Ford, Sloan, Watson and Gates. I'm embarrassed to say I don't know Sloan, other than as the namesake of the MIT business school.

They also picked Welch (GE) as manager of the century and I think that is where the confusion lies for me.

Imo Watson is the best entrepreneurial manager, having taken (or nurtured) all these obscure technology inventions and turned them into businesses where IBM dominated for so long. In my mind Gates vs. Watson is no comparison! But with Ford its a little different because he was an individual inventor of a business practice with the assembly line... not the same as what Watson did... however then you have to look at the assembly line (as invention) apart from Ford the company and then where does it fit? Deming (?) invented a bunch of manufacturing techniques which revolutionized Japan, but there was no Deming corp, does that make his inventions less valuable vs. Fords? Anyway I'm glad they picked who they did, I'm not disappointed at least.
