They sensed their danger so one sent his wife and kid away, the other decided to stay away from his home so that his wife and kids would not be in as much danger. Don't think so. If they'd really been in fear of their lives, it was very stupid of 'em to be in such an isolated place to begin with. It was also stupid to leave the gate open and to let the killers enter the house. And if they'd really been worried I don't doubt they'd also have been armed.
