If they sensed danger then how did they wind up in the dining room unprotected. No dogs, no locks. Wouldn't they have gone to a motel to hole up? They must have know whoever shot them because they must have let them in.

Veeery interesting.

Has it actually been established that they were having dinner? If so, how many table settings were out?
