As the first civilian on the scene after the murders, it must have been a pretty hair raising sight for those two associates. What does one think upon discovering such a scene? Might he not have had reason to fear that the killer(s) would still be around? Might he have not had reason to think he might have been included in the party if he had been there?

Well why weren't the two of them there earlier? They were supposed to spend the night at Bluebell Lane. Conkling lives in Pequannock. Why should they only have shown up at 1 a.m.?
