eric - SUNW has had a great run - a very shrewd combination of technology purchase, some development, and great marketing, combined with good field execution. I used to be pretty close to those guys (10 years ago) but had kind of forgotten about them, too bad for me. The funny part is that the flip-flop in web server share almost exactly mirrors the flip-flop in stock price. Could it be that web server leadership is a contrary indicator? I know that having your CEO on the cover of Forbes is a sure sign to sell all immediately... I don't know about Alpha "leadership" long term but they will at least do the next few years of intense development. Once they bring out an Alpha version of Tandem Himilaya, there will be Alpha support and refresh for 10 years - that's just the nature of Tandem's market and the base is important enough to justify the processor maintenance. So in practical terms, there will be Alphas around for a long time. If I were a high end customer and had a need for the things Alpha does well, I would not hesitate to buy.
