For BOLD type left arrow small b right arrow at beginning of what you want bold and type left arrow slash small b right arrow at the end of what you want bold

Don't remember about italics but there is a thread on SI somewhere that explains all this stuff including how to get red print as well. Better red than dead isn't that what they used to say. Senator McCarthy must of had a field day with that expression during the McCarthy era.
