That's why they are called "cell" phones. You travel from cell to cell. Each cell gets the same spectrum. That way you don't have to beam 100MM separate spectrum transmissions to one satellite.

Anyway I'm guessing a cell is about 3-5 miles. Certainly not a different area code.

Sort of like named after the Communist Party system of dividing all the members up into cells so that if one cell were captured by the McCarthy Committee they would not know the names of the members in another cell, and I know this from Herb Filbrick's, "I Led Three Lives"
