Rolta India Ltd., the flagship-company of Rolta Group launched its Internet Services in Mumbai today. RoltaNet, started with an investment of Rs500mn, will provide a host of value added services like web-mail, gaming, chat, messaging, newsgroups etc. RoltaNet also brings with it RoltaPass, three different kinds of dial-up connections with what it claims convenient and flexible time usage plan.

Said Mr. K. K. Singh CMD, Rolta India "during the first year of our operations we are planning to achieve 25,000 dial up connections, 100 IDSL and 100 co-located servers."

However, it faces stiff competition from established players like VSNL, Satyam Infoway, MTNL etc. But, the company is confident of achieving the targets. Mr Singh added, "the offers we are providing is the most competitive and we expect considerable interest. Also, we are provide a host of value added services at extremely competitive prices."

The company will also provide Internet and e-commerce related software services aimed at the international markets. He added "initially a substantial part of our revenues will come from the ISP business. However, over a longer time period Internet related software services will account for a significant portion, given the strong growth in the segment."

Other offerings from RoltaNet include Direct Connections to Corporates through dedicated point-to-point 64 Kbps, best of breeder co-location services, e-Business solutions and Internet consulting for the global market.

Rolta?s revenue for the nine months ended Sept 30,1999 the company?s revenue stands at Rs1.23bn while the company recorded a profit of Rs0.4bn which is a growth of 41% and 47% respectively.

Apart from regular usage during the day (8 a.m. to 8 p.m.) there is a nighttime plan as well (8 p.m. to 8.a.m). What is however questionable is the freebies that the company wishes to offer with its services at the start-up stages. The company is offering over 1,000 hours of free net surfing till December 31, 1999 to all its customers. This means that customers will be billed only from midnight January 1, 2000. (Probity)
