If this is a home machine that doesn't produce a revenue stream (you aren't using it for a home business), put your money into a good monitor and a 7200RPM hard drive that's larger than you can ever imagine needing. Get a K6 or Celeron at 400 to 500 MHZ, 18 months from now, bring the box into a shop and have them move the hard drive into a new box. The rate at which at your dollars will buy you more in the future is such that, if your replacement cycle is 4 years, you should break up the purchase into these two parts. 18 months from now, all the questions about Rambus, DDR, etc. will have been answered and you'll have a very easy time deciding to select one of these technologies, or maybe something else - and whatever you get will be faster and cost less too.
