Carl,

The 2 outgoing channels each have something like 3 amps peak current total, while the incoming channel has something like 1.8 amps. This gives a total peak output current of 7.8 amps,

Each controller pin must pull 28 Ohms down towards ground by 0.8V. Each controller might be driving up to 30 signals at a time, although on average only about half this number will be active at a time when it is transmitting, even fewer when it is receiving. So assuming worst case:

Current per controller channel = 30 * 0.8/28 = 0.86 A

The incoming channel will only drive the data bus which has 16 or 18 signals. So, worst case again:

Current per incoming channel = 18 * 0.4/(28/2) = 0.51 A

Therefore worst case total current = 2 * 0.86 + 0.51 = 2.23 A

Not quite so bad, is it?
