Apple Says It's Still No. 1 in Sales of Computers to Schools
Cupertino, California, Nov. 1 (Bloomberg) -- Apple Computer Inc., best known for its Macintosh line of computers, said it's still No. 1 in sales of personal computers to U.S. educational institutions, disputing a claim by Dell Computer Corp.
Reports from Scholastic Corp.'s Quality Education Data and International Data Corp. show that Apple holds the No. 1 position in the market, the company said. Figures used by Dell didn't incorporate Apple's direct sales in its calculations, relying instead on vendor and channel surveys, Apple said.
Round Rock, Texas-based Dell last week said it had surpassed Apple in the U.S. educational market, citing data compiled by Dataquest, a unit of Stanford, Connecticut-based Gartner Group Inc., an information-technology consulting company.
Shares of Cupertino, California-based Apple fell 2 1/2 to 77 5/8. Dell shares rose 5/8 to 40 3/4. Apple's statement was released after the close of regular U.S. trading. |
