Some important news accounts for STM's nice performance on the European exchanges today: STMicroelectronics, Telia claim Internet breakthrough STMicroelectronics NV (STM: news, msgs), the European semiconductor company, and Telia, the Swedish telecommunications operator, announced Monday a technical breakthrough which could dramatically improve the delivery of Internet services to the home or office. According to the Financial Times, the two companies are claiming to have developed a new generation of silicon chips which are economically priced but capable of delivering data such as Internet information or full motion video over ordinary telephone lines at speeds up to 1,000 times faster than conventional personal computer modems.
