The problem wasn't the modem, which was connecting at 28.8. The problem was the backbone, I suspect. Things got magically better about midnight last night, and are now tolerable, though they could still be faster. I hope you never experience the thrill of reading SI posts at 2 minutes apiece. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they don't get really bad again. Carl
