- Easy come, easier go: C-Cube, which bought DiviCom for about $150
million in 1996, is selling it to Harmonic Inc. for around $1.5 billion worth of Harmonic stock.

- Sony is expected to announce a DTV set-top box at the Consumer
Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January and "a more comprehensive DTV
product lineup" later in the year, according to president Teruaki Aoki.

- Something to think about: A reader wrote me to complain that his
Samsung HCH551W HDTV would not work with his Toshiba SD-9100
progressive-scan DVD player. Perhaps if the Toshiba player were to
output an 8-VSB RF signal....

- Sales to U.S. dealers of DVD players for the first 41 weeks of
1999 grew 314% over the same period in 1998.

- TiVo has shipped 30,000 Philips-made personal video recorders to
dealers and customers. Sony-made units are expected next year. TiVo's 3rd-quarter loss was $20 million (vs. $2.7 million last year).

- Broadcasting & Cable reports that US West's VDSL experiment in the
Phoenix area has picked up 12,000 subscribers -- about 25% of the homes passed in the area.
