A bit of history on GEC Marconi. Perhaps helpful to you.
GEC plc jointly with Siemens created (1988) GPT which was GEC and Plessey. Siemens -which had 40% of the venture- wanted the 60% of GPT but Lord Weinstock didn't want to sell.

Siemens went to the UK to sell EWSD switches. but GPT, which made the switches for BT -the System X, which is mainly sold in the UK alone- was not interested in selling EWSD switches.

Siemens pulled out (after getting SDH technlogy) and left GPT alone which is now part of Marconi. I suspect Marconi was formed also to sell stuff to wrap around those System X exchanges installed base.

Also there are a lot of companies that don not make transport equipment -Ericsson for instance- and they re-sell Marconi's. Marconi is becoming a specialist in trasport system now with the Nokia Symphonet under its belt.

Further, watch out if BT will not give that installed base of System X switches to Marconi to take care of them in some sort of deal.
