I have no idea how successful these referral programs are, but ETrade seems to be betting pretty heavily on their success! Personally, I don't see the harm in rewarding your customers for a referral. Like an independent contractor, minimal up-front expense and you only pay for what you get. Friendships post-referral ? ? ? If you're going to lose a friendship over a referral bonus . . . it must not have been much of a friendship to begin with.
