Ivy Compton Burnett is quite perverse, I should make clear. Her novels are quite alike; like each other, that is, but unlike the writing of anyone else on earth; though don't read the first or last. They are all quite short. Do try one, the library will have a few of them, and let me know what you think.

Be warned, most people think they are simply too weird. I think they are so intellectually and esthetically remarkable (they are full of improbably elegant conversations about appalling family secrets) that I occasionally reread one I've already read (I've read them all), and I follow N around and read particularly striking passages out loud to him, sometimes trapping him in the bathtub so he can't escape.
