IT Week: Lotus-Nokia WAP deal
Lotus is to enter the Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) market following a deal with Nokia. The deal will allow Lotus to develop and sell solutions that offer seamless connections between Lotus Domino and WAP-based handheld devices.
The deal will let users access corporate intranet information and the Internet using WAP phones and handsets from Nokia and other firms, said Pertti Lounamaa, vice president for Nokia Wireless Solutions. The agreement follows a separate deal between IBM and Hewlett-Packard to sell Nokia's server and to develop applications allowing mobile access to corporate email.

Lotus also announced that it will simplify its product pricing model in the first quarter of next year to woo small and medium-sized businesses, which find current prices uncompetitive compared to rival Microsoft's. "Our pricing list is a mess and we have to make it more simple and accessible," said Pierre Van Beneden, general manager and senior vice president for Lotus in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Separately Lotus chief executive Jeff Papows said the Lotus Sametime real-time tool will become an integral part of Domino R5 and Notes.

"The value of online meetings and application sharing will continue to increase," he said. He added that Lotus will integrate Microsoft's Media Player into its Notes client
