One does develop a certain protective attitude towards certain of one's collection, a feeling that it is up to oneself to preserve the knowledge contained therein against the forces of entropy and enthalpy. Once upon a time, I would buy books I didn't want or need, merely on the basis that they were deserving. But that is, indeed, a heavy burden. I've preserved such obscure items as statistical yearbooks by the Louisiana Department of Health from the early 20th century, detailing death by such agents as black widow spiders, snakes, and venereal disease, broken down by sex, race, age, and parish of residence. I can't imagine who would want it, but it can never be replaced.
