ICA application access is remote control/server-based technology. Since applications are not loaded locally to the machine - users connecting over networks to WinFrame/MetaFrame servers need 'good' bandwidth to use their applications. The goal is that the user should never feel that there is a considerable lag to running the application from the server - which is usually not noticed when running the application locally. The higher the network bandwidth in between (and also the higher the server bandwidth) the client and the WinFrame/MetaFrame server - the better the odds of the user feeling that application experience was great - as if it was loaded locally.

Users who access applications via VPN's and ASP's are most susceptible to performance lags - as they are typically dial-up (analog telephone PPP) users - although VPN's can also be remote offices connected (T1/DSL/ISDN). Delivering high network bandwidth to these dialup PPP users is the tricky part. When we see vendors like CTXS/CSCO partnering to make use of new technologies - i.e. NBAR - we can assume that the technologies to providing great application access to these 'more susceptible' users is getting better.
