Intel "Camino" chipset in couple of weeks

SEOUL, Nov 3 (Reuters) - Intel Corp plans to formally introduce in the next couple of weeks a new memory chipset which has been delayed due to compatibility problems, Intel's president and chief executive officer Craig Barrett said on Wednesday.

"We do plan to formally introduce the Camino chipset or the 820 chipset supporting Rambus (technology) within the next couple of weeks," Barrett told a news conference. He did not provide an exact date for the introduction.

Intel said in late September it had delayed shipment of the chipset, code-named Camino, after tests showed occasional compatability problems in personal computers using memory-enhancing technology from Rambus Inc.

The 820 chipset was designed to improve the performance of the Intel-based personal computer bus - the central data pathway within every PC that transfers data between components.

Major memory chip makers had prepared for commercial production on Rambus technology-applied memory chips but had to delay their production in line with Intel's delay.

Barrett is in Seoul to participate in a seminar on electronic commerce and electronic business as well attend a ceremony to donate Intel processor-based PCs and networking equipment to a South Korean Internet PC training centre.

Intel valued the donation at $300,000 and said in a statement the Internet PC Training Centre in Seoul would be equipped with more than 160 PCs and networking equipment.
