Sea Captain Speaks at Convocation
Captain Deborah Doane Dempsey will share her adventures as a sea captain and Columbia River pilot at the University Convocation on Wednesay, Nov. 3, in Cone Chapel at 11:30 a.m. Dempsey, a graduate of the Maine Maritime Academy, is one of only a handful of women to hold an unlimited master's license, which allows her to sail ships of any tonnage on all oceans. Now a pilot working the treacherous Columbia River Bar, she facies [sic] dangers and physical demands in a traditionally male environment on a daily basis. Her recent book, The Captain's a Woman: Tales of a Merchant Mariner, is a sea story that extends beyond the usual boundaries. ___________________________________

Reviews: Deborah Doane Dempsey's maritime career has been filled with firsts. She was the first female to graduate from a U.S. maritime or military academy. The first American woman to be licensed as a master mariner and to command a cargo ship on international voyages. The first woman to become a regular member of the Council of American Master Mariners. The only woman among nine ship captains to earn the U.S. Navy's Meritorious Public Service Award during the Persian Gulf War. But this book clearly shows that Dempsey takes pride not so much in being a trail blazer as in having earned the respect of colleagues by paying her dues and passing the tests faced by any seagoing officer. Now a pilot working the treacherous Columbia River Bar, [Hey! Somebody swiped that!] Dempsey is surprisingly matter-of-fact about her achievements, so it's left to her coauthor, Joanne Reckler Foster, to provide a landlubber's perspective. Together, their point/counterpoint description of the captain's job makes fascinating reading.

Oh; she's also related to the Doane's Little Liver Pills. (Of course!) Maybe I can get some, for the toll this seaman has exacted. I wonder ~ well ~ Sea Captains drink (can you say Valdez?) ~ but I don't think Bar Pilots do. Uh-uh. (Why do you think they call them Bar Pilots?)
Should control myself, maybe.
Should I wear my pea coat? And a little necklace of wine-cork floats? |
