Your applications sound like they're primarily integer (though I am not familiar with any PC configurations that display on 4 monitors,).

So, I would expect the perceived performance of those two systems would be identical if both had the same configuration (amount of memory, class of hard drive, etc.)

If this system uses a lot of DMA, the point to point EV6 bus of the Athlon might be a better choice. Given that much of the work being done is streaming data for display, Rambus 800 (if you can find and afford it) might give it the edge over the PC100 used by present Athlons.

But, in general, the performance of a Coppermine 733 and Athlon 700 should be very similar.

If you wait 3 months, you'll be able to get a faster system. 3 more months, and it'll be even faster, etc.

I'd avoid a system using one of the slow versions of Rambus, especially "PC600", it would cost more and perform worse than the Rambus 800 or PC100.
