*** PERFORMANCE UPDATE ****
As many of you may know, we have recently experienced intermittent performance issues during the last few days. These periodic performance issues were due to sudden, unusually high processing loads on our database server. These abrupt increases in processing load were not due to traffic from our members. In fact, almost all of the additional load was from the operating system, not from services for our users.
Generally, in situations like this, rebooting the system enables us to eliminate the cause of the problem and return to normal operating levels. Consequently, after we began seeing performance issues on October 31 around 10:00 PST, we rebooted the system, which made the site unavailable between 11:30 PST and 12:45 PST. On November 1, after experiencing intermittent performance issues around 13:10 PST, we replaced some faulty hardware and rebooted the system, which made the site unavailable between 15:05 PST and 15:47 PST. After each rebooting, the system resumed normal operation.
After this morning?s intermittent performance issues, which started around 03:10 PST, we switched over to our current backup system and took an extended downtime, from 04:38 PST to 06:05 PST, in order to conduct a full diagnosis and identify the root cause. The system is now running at normal operating levels on our backup system, and we believe we have identified the problem. We are currently working on a permanent fix.
As you may recall, we have been planning to implement a high-availability backup system, sometimes referred to as a "hot backup," in early November. As of today, we have conducted three successful dress rehearsals on October 15, 22 and 29. The last dress rehearsal was almost perfect. However, we want to have a flawless dress rehearsal before switching over to the high-availability servers, so we plan to have another rehearsal in the next few days and then switch over to the new servers.
We have had additional engineering and operations staff, as well as staff from all of our vendors, on site to closely monitor system performance and address issues during this time. We will continue to keep you updated on system status.
Thank you for your patience and understanding.
