Okay, here's a personal story, for which I will either be exonerated or pilloried. FYI, I do definitely prefer the former.
Back three years ago we decided to buy a very nice sideboard at a furniture chain in this area. I paid for it on credit card. But when they did the calculations, they inadvertently added the sales tax to the delivery charge along with the furniture piece. There is no tax here on services. I pointed out the error, they ran a credit on the card, then to all appearances ran a new charge for the correct amount.
Several weeks later, I got the bill, which only showed the original charge, then the credit, but not the new corrected charge. I called the furniture store, and told them that the new charge had not been billed, and also told them the correct amount. They told me they would look into it and bill my account the correct amount. A month later, I got the next bill, and to my surprise, again no charge. So I called them yet again and told them they should remonstrate with their accounting department and get it billed. They again told me they would check it out. Another month later, still no charge.
This time, my take on the situation was, well, if they want to give me the damn thing for free, despite my best efforts to pay for it, well, let them. The last time I'd called I'd spent fifteen minutes on the phone, and I wasn't about to do it again or drive out there again and go through everything in the flesh.
And it's really a very nice sideboard. We've decided to buy all our furniture there from now on. <grin> |
