Answer: four gallons.

Fill the three gallon container and pour it into the five gallon container. Then fill the three gallon container again and empty it into the five gallon container until the five gallon container is full. You now have one gallon in the three gallon container. Empty the five gallon container and pour the remaining part of the three gallon container along with another full three gallons. The five gallon container now contains four gallons.
