You are right. There are (rare) cases. I don't mean to suggest bankers do not do a good job much of the time. Usually the candidates are turned away before the due diligence stage is reached. But yes, there can be a case where the due diligence does uncover things not apparent earlier. My point was more accurately that this kind of screening is not an accurate description of what the due diligence function is.
