Charles, <Nintendo & Rambus> When people talk about "pricey Rambus memory", I hear it as "pricey RIMMs". The chips themselves may be not too much above core DRAMs (plus royalities, plus extra silicon area for controller). The RIMMs, however, must be manufactured with trace delays matched down to 5ps in propagation time, as per their design reference p4-10. With 170ps/inch and 4" long, it means the thickness uniformity and trace etch must be accurate to better than 0.5% each. Add uncertainties in top coating, variability in soldering, etc... and you may come to some idea as what might it cost to make "compatible" RIMMs. As per remark of our "super-rich-but-retarded" buddy, his remark is again as accurate as a fart at the moon:) The Nintendo already took their part of Rambus charms by having the product delayed by 1 1/2 year, see for example: prismark.com And it runs only at 250MHz, not at 400/800 as Intel wants it...It is quite a bit of a difference.
