Well, I was not there very long and never got a chance to get out of urban Sapporo. Some people I knew went to a hotspring bath and enjoyed themselves.

Sapporo is a nice city. Very modern with wide streets, a lot of green space, and not particularly crowded.

The prices in this part of Japan are pretty good. Beer is fairly expensive, 750 Yen, but the food was cheap, 1,500 Yen can get you a nice dinner in a restaurant. I was staying at the best hotel in town for 14,000 Yen a night which is comparable to prices in the US for a high-class inner city hotel.

The difficult part of visiting Japan it that I was transformed into an illiterate. There are very few signs using the roman alphabet and you have to guess what a particular store or place does. I did a lot of pointing. For instance, to order food at a restaurant, you go outside and point at the models of the selections in the window.

The people, in general, were friendly and when we went out to pubs at night groups of young women would ask if they could join us -- of course we said yes.
