Sun Microsystems unveils new servers, workstations

SAN FRANCISCO, Nov 2 (Reuters) - Sun Microsystems Inc.,
a developer of computer workstations, servers and
software, introduced new servers targeted to companies
providing Web hosting and other services for electronic
commerce.
Sun said on Tuesday it launched the Sun Enterprise 220R and
Sun Enterprise 420R, servers that are rackable and increasingly
used by big server farms for hosting Web sites and
applications.
The Palo Alto, Calif.-based company also launched new
carrier-grade servers for Internet service providers and
telecommunications companies, called Netra t 1400, Netra t 1405
and Netra t1 Server Model 100, extending the Netra family.
Pricing for the new servers start at $4,995. Sun also
announced storage systems to accompany the new servers.
Sun also introduced a high performance workstation for the
engineering and technical computing markets.
The company said the new system, called the Ultra 80
workstation, can be configured with up to four processors and
four gigabytes of memory and it runs the most advanced graphics
for scientific and engineering applications
Pricing for the Ultra 80 workstation begins at $15,635 for
a system with one 450 megahertz UltraSPARC II processor, four
megabytes of cache and 256 megabytes of memory.
At the same time, Sun dropped the price on its Ultra 60
workstations up to 18 percent. The Ultra 60 workstations are
now available starting at $8,995, for a system with 360
megahertz UltraSPARC II processor.
Sun also said that it is offering customers early access to
its next version of its UNIX operating system, Solaris 8, to
give a preview of the upcoming upgrade. Customers can get an
early access CD with Solaris 8 and other tools for $19.99.
