Pd James is usually talking about murder. Was the quote taken from that context? And who proposed the world cruise? Did I miss that? And what alleged guilt, counselor? I don't remember anyone alleging any. Please post the relevant material for I MUST have missed it.

I don't know what you expect prison to do for this woman or for society. Prison is not a good deterrent or "example". I believe there are studies that bear that out. It IS a good place to warehouse really dangerous folk and that is what it should be used for. Prison is extremely expensive and this is a useful person. Property crimes are silly and I do NOT care deeply about them. Property is nothing compared to the sanctity of the body, and being free from murder, rape and battery (imo), and property crimes- especially this kind where there is absolutely no contact between the "victims" and the perpetrator, do not lead to murder and mayhem. Saying that these crimes lead to "loss of respect for the person" (I assume you mean physical crimes against the person) is rather like the old Reefer Madness movie. It is illogical. I doubt you can find a single study to bear that theory out.

I suppose if you want to waste lots and lots of money on jail beds (which will need to be built since we are running out of them everywhere) you could jail people like this woman. I would rather see her working for restitution and doing good productive work- based on the very little I know of the case.
