Not sure where this goes but I heard it today and thought it was an interesting piece.

Gene Patents -- NPR's Richard Harris reports scientists are identifying new human genes at an astounding pace. Many of these bits of DNA are potentially useful to diagnose disease or to develop new treatments. It's a veritable gold rush for genetic information and people stake those claims by filing patents which give them exclusive rights to their discoveries. Those in industry say patents are helping speed the pace of developing new useful products. But some in academia worry that this patent rush could impede their quest to understand the basic biology of people. (8:00)
