Oh, yeah, I could just give them the money myself. Lessee, there's the $45 dollar booster fee, the $365 crew fee, the $65 uniform fee, the cost of transportation and hotels for regattas that are out of town, and on top of that, I can "buy" my points, $10 a point, and I need 70. But it's not the money, it's the fact that these things are communal, and it makes us both part of the team. So it's for me, and for him, to be able to feel like we are part of the team. I dunno, I am not a team person, and we don't actually have any team people in my family for as far back as I can remember. In fact, we almost don't have any ball people.

Ball people are people that like to play games with balls, be it football, baseball, tennis, soccer, whatever, these are team sports. Well, not tennis, really. But ball people are sorta like retrievers, they just have these *instincts.*

Then there are the kind of people who like physical activities but not team activities, that are not competitive, like hiking, or canoeing.

Crew is sort of in-between, it's competitive, but it's not really a "team" activity, much like swimming, tennis or golf. You are on a team, but it's very different from football. Not exactly sure how to put my finger on it.
