I guess my objection is only to the emphasis on the economics of it. I agree that the issue was primarily slavery, although it was intimately bound up with the issue of race, as can be seen in the aftermath of Emancipation....Since I had originally said that the primary issue of the Civil War was chattel slavery (I did not say race), I may have read too much into what you said...Yes, SI has been screwy....
