da Ponte was more than a "good" librettist! He did a brilliant job on Figaro and Giovanni. He was a poet (I think in the courts of Vienna) and a highly educated man. His libretti were carefully chosen and constructed to fit a composer's personality; he was an artist where many of the day were just hacks.

I won't argue about Mozart, who along with Bach, is my personal musical god, but I do think you're not giving Puccini enough credit with "a fine aria here and there". He was a master at bel canto and theatrical style. He understood the voice, and his melodies are soaring, his harmonies inventive. He shamelessly manipulates us, I agree! But so well!!

As for vocalization, Mozart's coloratura arias are like Hanon exercises for the voice.
