BTW: Solaris may well run on a PowerEdge 8500.

It does for sure, I have done some work on such a system.

But Solaris for X86 is in the same league as SCO - it's a stepchild. Only 1 in 4 solaris apps runs on the X86 version. The RISC version is big-endian, the X86 version is little-endian, so data can not be shared. The administration models are different.

Just because it has the same name doesn't make it the same OS... There is virtually no use of X86 solaris in the datacenter.
