Hey, I used to work two $h!t jobs just to pay for a college class here and there. It wasn't easy, and having worked at a grocery store during the day and a gas station 3rd shift, I can easily say neither of those were even close to what I wanted, but it was what I could get at the time. There's no excuse for crime in my book.
I agree, education is the key, but we can't be lenient on crime either. If not prison time, at least serious restitution should be made to the victims. A slap on the wrist and some community service isn't going to ease the loss of any victim, violent or not.
