Mike -
The target for DELL, as with all the Intel vendors, is McKinley, sometime in 2001. Merced products will be 4-way and less powerful than the foster-based X86 products available in the same time frame.

That gives DELL adequate time to develop and refine its game plan in early 2000, and develop some market traction with the Merced launch in late 2000. But the volume play in IA64 high end products is still at least 2 years out IMO.

The delay in IA64 products, and the re-positioning of Merced, has given SUN a window that they would otherwise not have had. Sun has used that, and the technology purchase which produced the UE10000, to establish some serious barriers to entry.

Any predictions on when DELL will produce a 64 or 128 processor machine? That's what it would take to compete with UE10000. I think it is wishful thinking on the part of some DELL boosters to think that Sun's turf is easy pickings, or that Intel architecture will be ready to tackle that any time soon.

Intel does not currently have chipset support for anything larger than an 8-way on the roadmap for IA64. They may do a 16-way for "son of McKinley" maybe late 2002.

I don't expect Sun to partner with DELL - I can't imagine any good business case, and Scott McNealy is not likely to play second fiddle to anyone, not even MSD.
