The Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification (DOCSIS) 1.0 standard
was developed to create an open market for cable modems, ultimately
enabling end-users to purchase the products of their choice, as is the case
today with dial-up and ISDN modems. The question for broadband users
then becomes which cable modem to buy? Price is a key consideration,
as is standards compatibility, and of course, product performance.
Cable Television Laboratories Inc. is conducting extensive interoperability
tests to ensure DOCSIS cable modems comply with the standard.
Products that pass are labeled "CableLabs Certified," assuring buyers that
the cable modem will work on any DOCSIS network. However, as part of
the DOCSIS certification process, CableLabs does not release product
performance data.

DATACOM NEWS set out to find an answer by organizing the first-ever
"Cable Modem Performance Challenge" with The Tolly Group, a leading
networking industry testing organization.
CABLE DATACOM NEWS invited more than a dozen DOCSIS cable
modem vendors to submit their products for independent testing by The
Tolly Group. Four vendors had the courage to accept the challenge: 3Com
Corp., Com21 Inc., Nortel Networks, and Toshiba American Information
Systems. 3Com submitted both an external cable modem and an internal
modem card for testing, while Com21, Nortel and Toshiba each provided
external DOCSIS modems.

Due to the strength of its upstream performance, Com21 also outpaced the field in the bi-directional batch transfer tests. At an interleave of 32, Com21 topped 3.5 Mbps and passed 4.2 Mbps at the 8 interleave setting. Nortel finished a strong second, followed by 3Com and Toshiba.

Looking at the upstream throughput results, Com21 dominated the tests by outperforming its peers in all three CMTS configurations. Nortel was the next strongest performer, with Toshiba bringing up the rear.
