Robert, thanks for the reply. IMO, while most of the inner works of SONET that can be found in its headers may be on the way out where future platforms are concerned, as they relate to legacy CO-related hardware hooks and topology management and surveillance issues, I think that we are going to see the "container" aspect of it (enveloping other protocols, most likely) with us for quite a while.

Every known wide area platform, optical or otherwise, of any significant size --even at this late stage -- is discussing containerization using SONET formats at the port level on trunking routes. With the exception of some IEEE GbE and FC formats, which are largely for internal enterprise uses still, as characterized by metro MANs and storage area networks which now can escape the shackles of close proximity networking... even those could move over to wider venues of interest... but most vendors from what I can see are still specking in SONET as far as the eye can see, in a thinned down version. I shall continue to observe this space, like yourself. To wit, some vendors are now even seriously contemplating the 768 levels of the stuff.

Regards, Frank Coluccio
