Compaq computers and Hewlett Packard both rose today as Smith Barney analyst Richard Gardner
made positive/favorable remarks on the 2 companies.

Specifically, he stated that the exit of No. 5 IBM and No. 7 NEC from the retail market frees up $3
BILLION in sales for both companies to go after.

Although good news, he indicated that it will be 1Q99 before either company will see the positive
impact of this development
