from the you never know department...
i wanted to briefly share a software installation story with the thread. i had problems a-plenty and the eventual success was a result of completely going against the grain.
i'd tried off and on for two days to install software from a cd. it just wasn't working. wasn't getting past the splash screen, or wasn't doing anything except sitting there. i mean for two hours, nothing. i'm a patient man, but this was beyond the realm of patience and deep into forget about it.
i was doing everything by the book as far as preparation goes... including shutting down all apps except explorer and systray. and i was spending lots of time on the phone with the company's tech. i gave up for the night (last night) and decided to come back to it today. and that's when an idea crossed my mind (dangerous, i know). since i run symantec software (systemworks2.0), and since it always likes to "be the boss" by monitoring installs, i figured, why not? quit shutting everything down, what is there to lose?
so i dumped all cache, cleaned out cookies, defragged and rebooted. didn't turn a thing off, just plopped the cd in the drive and went for it. guess what? a clean, successful installation! i love it. just the opposite of what one is supposed to do. <g3>
another lesson learned.
(i called the tech back today and gave him the good news. he added the new wrinkle to his trouble-shooting database and thanked me for making his day!)
:)
