RE: Installation of 3G infra.

Don't bet on Europe having 3G in place first... NTT DOCOMO is supposed to put the first WCDMA system in place, but IDO/DDI are hot on their tail with CDMA2000. Assuming the WCDMA systems are in place in time, which is a big assumption, they could start getting implemented in 2002-2003. CDMA2000 infra shouldn't take that long, which will be the upgrade path for companies like Airtouch/VOD and Sprint PCS/WCOM in the US.

The one thing that could upset that whole apple cart is HDR, which is a new variation of CDMA Qualcomm has developed, and is demonstrating (NEXT WEEK) that utilizes existing CDMAone infrastructure and existing 1.25 Mhz spectrum allocations to delivery up to 2 megabits/sec connections for data. AND it could be in place as early as next year (2000). The cost to implement for the carriers is a fraction of what the 3G costs will be, and if you get 600K to 2Meg in a mobile connection, will you (the user) notice the difference? My guess is you'll darn sure notice it's not 14.4 Kbps, but probably not care whether it's 3G or not. Qualcomm's CEO has stated that HDR could allow carriers to make profits on flat rate wireless access for $20-40 per month... who needs ISDN or 3G?

Press release for those interested... think there's a webcast of the event on QCOM's site too....

Just my 2 cents...
