You bring up a very interesting point. I guess I am not well versed enough in contract/trial logistics in this industry, as that quote is interesting in light of the following..

>>LINTHICUM, MD - November 4, 1999 - CIENA Corporation (Nasdaq: CIEN)
today announced it has signed a three year agreement with Williams
Communications, Inc. (NYSE: WCG). Under the contract, Williams
Communications is expected to become the first customer to deploy
CIENA's MultiWave CoreDirector, the market's first intelligent optical
core switch.<<

Williams signs an agreement (contract) with no trials? Huh? Anybody
knowledgable in this industry want to chime in here and clarify this?
Thanks.

Edit: Ooops... I also found this...

>>Pending successful completion of product trial and certification, which
is expected in early calendar 2000, CIENA anticipates that Williams
Communications will purchase and deploy at least $40 million in
CoreDirector systems over the three year term of the contract. <<

Which leads me to think that it is possible the Forbes writer got confused... after all, in one of Forbes early articles on Sycamore (but I am not sure if it was the same author) they even mispelled Ciena... <g>
