Part of the problem two weeks ago was Schwab was trying to add more capacity to their trading system. Obviously, that effort failed and they had to 'back out' the extra capacity just to get up and running. Now they're in their traditional year-end 'change freeze' period so there won't be any effort to add additional capacity until next year. As such, for the next few months, we will experience difficulty accessing the web site during busy market times (read: the open and close). What concerns me is that once next year starts, they'll be in their heavy 'enrollment period' ("IRA season") so its questionable if the extra capacity will be able to keep up with the additional customers.
