I don't think speculating on how their sacrifice could have been avoided in any way minimizes their heroism. I suspect the bulk of the heroes who sacrificed their lives in WWII didn't see the war as a great opportunity to become heroes.

If his only goal was to grab the power of the Presidency, then Pat showed bad judgment in picking some of the material in his book. However, I think he's not so much interested in power as he is in ideas about which he is passionate. In that respect he is an Anti-Clinton which makes him at least a little attractive to me.

I think it is a marvelous thing for a potential President to think about the mistakes of the past in order to find clues about how to proceed in the future.
